He rides his pink elk, Yakul, up the hillside from his village passing 3 ladies along the way, consisting of Kaya (English: Tara strong), his more youthful sister (or, inside the jap version, the female Ashitaka has promised to marry). He tells the girls that the village oracle, Hii-sama (japanese: Mitsuko Mori), has sensed trouble and is ordering anybody returned to the village. Kaya tells him the antique guy Ji-san observed some thing from his watchtower, so Ashitaka rides to see him. Ashitaka climbs the tower and watches as a creature covered in wormy tendrils violently emerges from the woodland. In the sun, it's revealed to be a massive boar that has became a demon: a tatari gami. It knocks down the tower however Ashitaka and Ji-san bounce to protection before Ashitaka pursues it on Yakul.

He pleads with the demon to spare their village, but the boar would not pay attention. While it attacks the 3 village women, Ashitaka is forced to intervene, killing it with of his arrows. All through the fight, the demon's tendrils latch onto Ashitaka's right arm and, with the killing blow, dissolve, burning his pores and skin. Villagers rush up the hill, one in every of them sporting the elderly oracle. She offers Ashitaka some water to pour over his arm before bowing before the boar, promising to perform rites and asking it to undergo them no ill will. But, in preference to waiting to die, he can rise to satisfy his destiny. She offers him an iron ball recovered from the boar's body, believing it to be the motive of his demonic transformation. The oracle tells Ashitaka to journey to the west to peer with eyes unclouded but warns him he can never return. Ashitaka is of the same opinion, slicing his topknot as a symbol of his separation, and leaves.

As he rides Yakul out of the village, Kaya methods him, breaking the taboo of seeing a banished individual. She gives him her crystal dagger necklace. Ashitaka thanks her and says he will in no way forget her. He rides off, Kaya staring after him.

The electricity of the Curse

Ashitaka and Yakul journey many miles westward, throughout plains and mountains. In the future, they see smoke inside the distance and discover samurai infantrymen fighting with unarmed villagers. Ashitaka rushes to the protection of a woman but, as he pulls lower back on his bow, his arm throbs visibly and while the arrow is released it flies with such pressure that it takes the samurai's sword and accommodations it in a tree, with the man's arms still attached. They see some thugs following them, no doubt after Ashitaka's gold, and Jigo proposes a brief getaway. They camp together later, cooking their rice, and Jigo mentions an ancient people known as the Emishi who made bowls and arrows like Ashitaka's and who were rumored to experience crimson elk like Ashitaka's, though he tips he's going to hold the prince's mystery. Ashitaka tells Jigo about his experience with the boar demon and his quest to discover its origins and suggests Jigo the iron ball. Jigo doesn't think much of Ashitaka's curse ("you are beneath a curse? So what? So's the complete damn international"), however he does tell him of a mining town similarly to the west, surrounded via ancient forests wherein large gods still dwell. The next morning Ashitaka leaves quietly to maintain his journey alone at the same time as Jigo sleeps.

The women are former prostitutes, the guys give an explanation for; woman Eboshi buys the contracts of every brothel girl she finds. But, on the grounds that fearless Eboshi came to Tatara, things have changed for the higher. They inform of Nago, the boar god who as soon as dominated the forest surrounding the metropolis. Nago have become enraged whilst the men reduce timber all the way down to get on the ore beneath the floor and frequently attacked along with his herd of boars. When Eboshi got here with her gunners, she set fireplace to the wooded area and shot Nago. Ashitaka's arm swells in anger as he realizes that it become Nago who inflicted his cursed wound, and girl Eboshi who became Nago right into a demon.

They conjure new weapons stimulated by way of the chinese language interior their personal hut. Eboshi explains the weapons are for the women in the castle, for his or her safety. She apologizes to Ashitaka again for inflicting his curse, however Ashitaka is angered by means of Eboshi's production of weapons and asks how an awful lot greater hate she'll spread. His arm tries to draw his sword however Ashitaka holds it down, saying that he wouldn't hesitate to kill her to lift the curse, however he fears it would not forestall there. An elderly leper asks Ashitaka to have mercy on female Eboshi because she took pity on the lepers, caring for them and sheltering them when no person else might. He says life is difficult, it's miles cursed, however nevertheless human beings discover methods to preserve dwelling.

Up at the stockade Eboshi checks her new gun, firing onto the hillside and scattering a tribe of apes attempting to plant new timber. Eboshi asks Ashitaka to stay in Tatara; as soon as she kills the woodland Spirit all the different gods will be reduced to lumbering beasts and Princess Mononoke (because of this vengeful spirit--she's referring to the wolf female San) will be human. Eboshi explains San lives to kill her. It's said the blood of the woodland Spirit can supply immortality and Eboshi theorizes that it may treatment her lepers--and perhaps Ashitaka's curse. Ashitaka leaves and visits the forge where he attempts out the bellows. The ladies are keen to reveal him and Toki assures him that, notwithstanding the tough paintings, their lives are higher here than within the brothels.

As Eboshi prepares her lure, Ashitaka begs San no longer to throw her life away but, at the sound of a wolf's howl, she rushes forward. A gun blast at her ft sends her plummeting off the roof and a second shot from Eboshi's women breaks the masks off her face, knocking her subconscious. Ashitaka makes use of the tremendous strength of his cursed arm to tear a beam from the roof and halt the crowd before they could get to San. He shakes her wakeful however she assaults him and runs to Eboshi. San and Eboshi duel, surrounded by way of the cheering mob.

His anger developing, Ashitaka walks ahead, his hate manifesting as ghostly tendrils from his arm. He effortlessly bends the sword of Gonza, who is now satisfied Ashitaka is in league with San. Ashitaka pushes his way thru the gang earlier than grabbing San's arm and preventing Eboshi's onslaught together with his sword hand. Because the tendrils on his arm develop, he calls to the onlookers: "that is what hate seems like. It's eating me alive, and shortly it's going to kill me. Worry and anger only make it develop faster."

However Eboshi grows bored with his curse, quipping that she'll treatment him via putting off his arm, and swings at him with a small dagger. Ashitaka knocks both her and San out to forestall them from preventing. He palms female Eboshi to her people and says he's taking San away. One of the women, dissatisfied at his treatment of female Eboshi, objectives her gun and orders him now not to transport. Ashitaka flippantly walks away but the gun goes off, passing thru his frame. However, Ashitaka's curse maintains him alive and he keeps taking walks in the direction of the gate. Whilst the guards may not open the gate, announcing it takes ten men to raise it, Ashitaka opens it himself no matter bleeding profusely. San's wolf brothers wait simply outside. Even though she loves San, Moro is aware that San will in no way absolutely belong anywhere--both to the wolves or the humans--and there's not anything Moro or Ashitaka can do about that. Moro tells Ashitaka to depart her cave by way of dawn; if he comes returned she'll kill him.
